PRACTITIONERS’ TOOLBOX – by Rhonda Williams, RCIC

Marketing Mastery

One of the reasons that RCICs leave our profession is because they don’t have enough clients. Getting clients is difficult to start with and you need some tools. Even if you’ve been in business for some time, refreshing your material can push your profile up a notch. Marketing your services can be a full time job now with all the platforms you need to cover. Make the most of your promotional opportunities.

There are a ton of courses and programs that you can take about marketing.  And you’ll have to find those that suit your needs and personality the best.  For examples of successful and unsuccessful marketing campaigns, try listening to Terry O’Reilly on CBC radio’s Under the Influence.  You can read all the past episodes for free, listen to them on podcast or listen to current episodes as they’re aired on CBC radio.  http://www.cbc.ca/radio/undertheinfluence/about

Otherwise, take a look online at the multitude of courses you can take.  Decide if you want to try online marketing or more traditional types of marketing.  Take a social media boot-camp program if social media is all new to you – because it’s complicated!  Seek out experts and sift through information to find what suits your situation the best.

Social media marketing bootcamp online: https://www.udemy.com/social-media-marketing-bootcamp

You can set up a website very inexpensively these days. You might find it preferable to set one up that is easy to change and control without the need for constantly calling up and paying the website guy.  On the other hand you may prefer to have the expertise of a professional, but you’lll have to budget accordingly. If you want to start with a free one, research online for free websites, but here is a place to start:

Networking and telling everyone you meet about what you do is a great free way to let people know about your services. So get out there and meet people. Give a talk at your local library or at the local Rotary Club. Tell them what’s new in immigration! Answer questions and, if you’re allowed to do so, hand out your business cards.

Speaking of business cards, Vistaprint is a very affordable online store where you can design a logo, business cards and a lot of other branded marketing materials like calendars, t-shirts. There are a lot of choices, but you can check this out:

Of course, the best marketing of all is satisfied customers who tell everyone they know how marvelous, professional and effective your service was, and then refer more wonderful fee paying clients to you!

Promotional Photos
Would you like to see what other people think about photos you plan to use in your professional promotional materials?  Use photofeeler to see whether other people think you look competent, likable and influential.  In return, you rate how others appear to you in the same terms – competent, likable and influential.  There’s no fee to join or participate if you’re willing to rate others.  There is a small fee if you just want to have your own photos rated. This is a great way to up your game for your promotional materials. Once you get your results, you can fine tune your photos to make sure you’re making the right impression.

Promotional videos
Easily make your own promotional videos complete with music and use them on your website, on social media, and elsewhere.  You provide the photos, chose a theme, add music and you’ve got a promotional video to use anywhere in a very short time (like half an hour!).  Get noticed with this great tool. There’s a free trial or upgrade to monthly fees for a wider variety of options.

Good luck!
