The Skilled Worker category is for experienced  workers in a professional, management, technical, trade or other skilled occupation. The Healthcare Professionals category was focused specifically on medical professionals. The International Graduate and Post-Graduate categories is for international students (undergraduate and postgraduate) who have come to study at Canadian institutions and who wish to remain in Canada and start their careers in British Columbia. The Entry-Level and Semi-Skilled category is open to workers in specific occupations in tourism/hospitality, long-haul trucking, food processing, and healthcare.

Except for ELSS, all categories have an Express Entry BC (EEBC) option. The EEBC option requires applicants to meet BC PNP criteria  and those of the federal Express Entry programs to benefit from faster processing of their federal permanent residency application.

Hire an In-Home Caregiver – Wages, Working Conditions and Occupations

Families can hire a foreign caregiver to provide care, in a private residence, to children, seniors or persons with certified medical needs, when Canadians and permanent residents are not available.

Under the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP), families can hire foreign caregivers. However, the caregivers must:

provide care on a full-time basis (minimum 30 hours per week)
work in the private household where the care is being provided
meet the requirements set Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC)/Service Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC)

Recent media reports and stakeholder interventions have drawn attention to the extraordinary contribution of refugee claimants working in Canada’s healthcare sector during the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly in long-term care centres in Quebec. In some cases, these individuals contracted COVID-19 and some may have passed away due to this illness and left behind family members in Canada. As these individuals face an uncertain future in Canada, it has been suggested that the current circumstances merit exceptional measures to provide these individuals with Permanent Residence status in recognition of their service during the pandemic.

While most of the attention has been focused on Quebec, there are refugee claimants across Canada who are doing similar work and facing similar risks to their health.
