How to Apply for PR Travel Document (PRTD) through the Representative Permanent Residence (PR) Portal

NOTE 1: Please be advised that Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD) applications are no longer accepted by some Visa Application Centres (VACs). Please reference this post for information on how to apply for a PRTD online.

NOTE 2: The following process is able to be used online PRTD application. It is also applicable for the paper based application.

NOTE 3: You can only apply for one PR card and one PR travel document at a time.

Are you eligible?

To be eligible for a PRTD, you must:

  • be a permanent resident outside Canada;
  • confirm your PR status;
  • not be in possession of a valid PR card;
  • meet the residency obligation of a permanent resident;
  • not be a Canadian citizen;
  • not be a permanent resident who wants to voluntarily give up (renounce) their PR status, and
  • not have lost your PR status.

Step 1: Log in to Portal through Following Link:

Step 2: Select “Start New Application” under “Apply for, renew or replace my Permanent Resident card or Permanent Resident Travel Document”

Step 3: Fill in the Client’s Basic Information (Client’s Profile)

Step 4: After Filling in the Client’s Information, Click “Continue” and the Following Webpage will Show Up

Upload Proof if the PR Travel Document Request is Urgent

To qualify for urgent Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD) processing, you must be travelling within the next three months due to:

  • Your own serious illness;
  • Serious illness or death of your family member;
  • Lost/stolen Permanent Resident card while on temporary travel outside of Canada;
  • You are in a crisis, emergency, or vulnerable situation;
  • Other.

Even if you qualify, we can’t guarantee we’ll process your application urgently or that you will get your PRTD on time.

If you request priority processing, please choose the reason why and upload required documentation as proof of your situation. Upload these documents into the fields provided and keep copies for your own records.

Suggested PRTD Application Supporting Document List:

  • Letter of explanation
  • Copy of current valid passport
  • Photocopies of all previous passports/travel documents used in the last 5 years
  • Proof of spouse’s residency in the five years immediately before the application
  • Supplementary Travel Log
  • Supporting legal documentation as proof of name change
  • Humanitarian & Compassionate grounds request letter
  • Police report
  • Proof of full-time Canadian Employment outside Canada
  • Marriage Certificate
  • Divorce Certificate
  • Adoption Order
  • Relative’s PR Card or Citizenship Certificate
  • Proof of spouse’s Canadian Employment outside Canada
  • Identity Document (driver’s licence, etc.)
  • Birth certificate – dependent
  • Proof of Residency in Canada in the five years immediately before the application
  • Spouse’s Passports or Travel Documents
  • Authorization to travel (for a minor)
  • Legal Change of Name
  • Other

Considerations:

  • Recommended document labelling: please use the following naming convention when labelling your documents: “Last Name – First Name – Document type – #”. For example: “Wong – John – Proof of Education -1”.
  • Please make sure your documents are labelled properly. For example, if you upload a picture of your child, you should label the file so that it includes the name of that child.
  • File names can only contain the following characters: “A-Z” “a-z” “0-9” “-” “_” “.”
  • Photos: You need to upload one photo for each person on your application. You must also upload a copy of the back of each photo showing:
    • the name and date of birth of the subject, as well as the name and complete address of the photography studio;
    • the date the photo was taken;
    • the photographer may use a stamp or handwrite this information.

  • Accepted file types: Only PDF, JPG, JPEG, and PNG are accepted.
  • Accepted file size: File size should be 4mb maximum and photos should be 420×540 pixels minimum.
