Employee Reference Letter and Letter of Employment

Why you may need a letter of employment

There are many times you may need a letter of employment, such as when you’re renting or buying a house. It’s a method of proving you have consistent income, so your employer needs to verify that you work for them. To do this, you need to send a detailed request to the right person in your company. It’s also important to request it far enough in advance to ensure you receive your letter of employment on time. In this article, we explain what a letter of employment is, provide a template for how to request one, and examples of what a letter of employment looks like.

There are a variety of situations where you may need to request a letter of employment from your company. Here are some of the most common ones:

  • You need to add your points for your PR immigration CRS in Canada.
  • You need to apply for your PNP in provincial immigration.
  • You need to prove your current status to IRCC.
  • You’re purchasing a new home or apartment. If you want to buy a home or apartment, you likely need to apply for a mortgage. Banks and lenders will require you to have a letter of employment to ensure you can pay the loan back.

  • You’re renting a new home or apartment. Landlords and property managers want to rent to someone they can trust to take care of their property and pay rent. So, they may request a letter of employment before agreeing to rent to you.

  • You’re applying for a loan or adjusting the terms of a current one. Similar to taking out a mortgage, to qualify for any type of loan, it’s standard for the bank to request a letter of employment.

  • You’ve applied for a new job. Prospective employers may request a letter of employment from your current or most recent employer. It confirms the work experience you included on your resume.
