About CIC – Canada Immigration and Citizenship

Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) is the federal department in Canada that is responsible for issues of immigration and citizenship.  Currently, the Minister of Citizenship and Immigration is the Honourable Jason Kenney, P.C., M.P. 

 

CIC derives its mandate from the Constitution Act, 1867, the Citizenship Act, and the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.  CIC’s mandate can be accessed here.

Citizenship and Immigration Canada is “responsible for immigration, settlement, citizenship and multiculturalism programs and service.”  These include:

  • Visitor visas
  • Sponsoring members of the family class
  • Study permits
  • Sponsoring refugees
  • Work permits
  • Becoming a Canadian citizen
  • Permanent resident visas
  • Proof of Canadian citizenship
